Chapter Nine

Their Monday morning commute was a far more relaxed one than the previous Friday’s. Logan didn’t feel as angry inside, while Cass didn’t seem quite so withdrawn.

And yet there was so much unspoken between them, Logan worried they might never sort it all out.

When they got off the elevator, Cass went straight to her office, her high heels clicking with purpose on the fresh-waxed, shining tiles. She wore a simple navy dress with big gold buttons down the front, looking both sexy and businesslike, and Logan couldn’t take his eyes off the sway of her hips as she walked away from him. She fumbled with the key to her door, then was gone.

He fired up the computer at the reception desk.

Less than five minutes later, she was back.

“Did you speak to Maintenance and Security?” she asked.

He looked up from his screen. “Why? Was your door open again?”

“No. But someone went through the files on my desk. They were spread around, not in a neat pile the way I left them.”

That made little sense. No one had any reason to do that. She wouldn’t leave classified information sitting on her desk for anyone to steal. She had no access to it to begin with. She’d have to sign the key out, and her name wasn’t on the authorized list. Only two people knew where that key was hidden, too, although he was willing to bet it was under someone’s desk calendar.

Right next to their computer password.

While there was nothing wrong with Kramer Aerospace’s internal procedures for handling government classified material already under contract, by CSIS standards they were seriously outdated. Now that their security system had been breached, when this was over, Kramer Aerospace was going to have to update. Logan already had some recommendations for them to implement. The first was installing a proper security camera.

Until he had the guilty party pegged, however, he didn’t dare tip his hand. If he set up his own webcam too soon, and it was noticed, he’d lose his advantage, and no doubt his cover.

“Was it only the files that were touched?” he asked her, slipping right into investigator mode without a second thought.

Cass was too distracted to notice. He could see her running things through in her head. She bit the inside of her lip.

“I’m not really sure,” she admitted. “The petty cash is still there.” She fiddled with some papers on the counter above the reception desk, pushing them around with her fingertips, telling him without words how worried she was. “I didn’t count it, though.”

He pushed away from his computer. “Let’s go have another look.”

The petty cash was all accounted for. She couldn’t find anything missing, only a few other things she was convinced were out of place. When she went through her desk drawers, she insisted that someone had been into them, too.

She folded her arms, the navy fabric of three-quarter-length sleeves pulling back to expose her elbows, and looked as if she were thinking hard.

“I don’t get it,” she finally said.
